BREAKING: Supreme Court Upholds Lawal as Governor of Zamafara State
By Reporter 5
Supreme Court on Friday, 12 January 2024, uphold the election of Dauda Lawal, the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), as the governor if Zamfara State.
The ruling by the Appeal Court that declared the Zamafara State gubernatorial election to be inconclusive was overturned by the Supreme Court.
The All Progressives Congress (APC) gubernatorial candidate Bello Matawalle’s case, which contested Dauda Lawal of the PDP’s victory, was denied by the tribunal.

However, the state election was ruled inclusive by The Appeal Court, which also mandated a rerun in each of the three local government districts—Maradun, Birnin-Magaji, and Bukkuyum.
The Court ruled that the Independent National Electoral Commission erred in using the IReV results to announce the winner in the affected Local Government Area, noting that the IReV is only meant to be viewed.
Emmanuel Agim called the Appeal Court ruling “perverse” when he read the Supreme Court lead judgement.
According to his ruling, among other things, the respondents failed to present sufficient proof to support their claims of excessive voting.
“The Court of Appeal decision is perverse,” declared Agim, “as no evidential foundation. Although the appeal has merit, it succeeds, and it is allowed. The order that the election is inclusive is hereby set aside. The election of the appellant is upheld.”
