Thousands of Kano Youth Celebrate Supreme Court’s Verdict

By Reporter 2

After the Supreme Court upheld Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s election as the legitimate leader of Kano State, many young people flocked to several main avenues on Friday, January 12, 2024, to celebrate the verdict.

Along all the city’s streets, young people could be seen in formation waving banners and party emblems while dancing and screaming songs of unity.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) emblem, brooms, was spotted being dragged by some of the joyful young people as they were seen stunting with vehicles and motorbikes around the city.

A jubilant adolescent, who only revealed his name as Hassan, pointed out that the Supreme Court prevented what could have been a bloody response.

“The Supreme Court has saved Kano from violent reaction because, if the judgement had not favoured Abba, the situation would have been different by now.

However, “there is relief everywhere when you consider what you are currently witnessing. Individuals are carrying out their regular activities,” he remarked.

At the marketplaces that were formerly locked down in the early hours of Friday, January 12, 2024, such as the Rimi and Kantin Kwari markets, traders have already started opening their stores and places of business.

At the time this report was filed, armed security guards had been stationed in key locations and were still maintaining watch.

Along all routes that go to the Government House, security has also stepped up, with everyone passing through the highways being thoroughly inspected.

Yusuf Abba of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) was declared the winner, but his 165,663 illegitimate votes were taken away by the tribunal. The tribunal determined that the ballots from which the votes were withheld were neither signed nor stamped.

Afterward, he requested justice from the appeals court. While criticizing the lower court for failing to remove the Governor from office, the Appellate Court maintained the tribunal’s verdict.

According to the Appellate Court, the Governor violated Section 177(c) of the constitution because the New Nigeria Peoples Party improperly sponsored him.
