FRSC: Kogi Accident Death Toll Drops by 14% in 2023

By Reporter 5

According to the Kogi State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), there was a 14% decrease in the state’s road crash mortality toll in 2023.

However, the FRSC reported that at the 2023 Yuletide, it observed 58 car accidents in which 28 people died.

This was revealed to media on Friday, 19 January 2024, in Lokoja, the State Capital, by the Sector Commander, Samuel Oyediji.

According to Oyedeji, there was a 14% drop in casualties as compared to the 2022–2023 period; nonetheless, there was an increase in Road Transport Company(s) (RTC), from 50 to 58.

He clarified that the command’s implementation of a variety of steps during the corps’ “Operation Zero Tolerance” was the reason for the notable drop in the number of people killed in traffic accidents.

Again, there was no significant traffic jam at that time, even with the State’s high vehicle traffic rate.

“This was also possible through the help of personnel (regular and special marshals) and other security agencies, who helped in the control of traffic at all the critical points identified in the state to ensure the free flow of traffic”

“It is the command’s wish that things get better day by day through strict compliance with traffic rules and regulations by the motorists plying the highways,” he said.

The Sector Commander continued by saying that even after the exercise was concluded, the command would not back down from implementing all necessary corrective actions to stop drivers’ excesses and guarantee a decrease in RTCs on Kogi’s roads.

He asserts that everyone has a responsibility to maintain the safety of the road, and drivers are urged to follow all traffic laws and regulations.

He also counselled drivers to maintain a high degree of tolerance, patience, and consideration for other road users at all times to guarantee a crash-free environment year-round.

He did, however, express gratitude to Kogi’s whole population as well as the broader driving public for their support and cooperation, which made the 2023 end-of-year special patrol run smoothly and successfully.

For the special exercise that concluded on January 18, the command deployed 800 people, 25 patrol vehicles, three ambulances, one heavy-duty tow truck, patrollers, and other operational equipment on December 15, 2023.
