Supreme Court Decision, Coup Against the People of Nasarawa – Aisha Yesufu

By Reporter 5

Renowned activist Aisha Yesufu has criticised the Supreme Court ruling upholding Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule’s election victory.

A case challenging the election of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)’s governorship candidate, Emmanuel Ombugadu, was rejected by the Supreme Court on Friday, 19 January 2024.

Yesufu responded on X on Friday, calling the ruling akin to a “coup” and a “robbery” that went against the wishes of the Nasarawa people.

“Nasarawa people were robbed of their mandate. This is a coup on the people. They chose who they wanted and were denied their mandate,” she wrote.

The decision was referred to by Yesufu as “another sad day for democracy in Nigeria.”

The Supreme Court ruled unanimously that there was insufficient evidence in the PDP’s appeal to support overturning the election.
According to Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, the PDP’s accusations against the election were not proven.

However, Yesufu maintained that the ruling undermined the wishes of the Nasarawa people who cast ballots for change.

She claimed that the people in Ombugadu had been denied their choice of governor by the Supreme Court.
