Killing in Plateau LG: Governor Relaxes Curfew
By Reporter 2
The Governor of Plateau State, Caleb Mutfwang, has eased the 24-hour curfew that was previously enforced in the Mangu Local Government Area of the State in response to the deaths and crises that have been occurring there since Monday, 22nd January 2024.
It is stated that during the attacks and killings in the council area, over forty people died and numerous houses were set on fire.
The Governor announced the curfew’s easing in a statement released on Friday, 26th January 2024 by Gyang Bere, his director of press and public affairs. According to the statement, the curfew will now be followed every day from 4 p.m. to 8 a.m. until further notice.
He stated that after strategic meetings with community leaders from many faiths and ethnic groups, the security situation in the Local Government area has improved, leading to the review.
“Governor Mutfwang announced that the curfew has been relaxed in response to a notable improvement in the security situation and after due consultation with the State Security Council,” the statement read.
“He asked security officials to implement the curfew to prevent a breakdown of law and order. He also advised residents of the Mangu Local Government Area to rigorously respect the curfew and abstain from taking the law into their own hands.”
“Governor Mutfwang expressed gratitude to the people for their cooperation thus far and urged them to continue collaborating with law enforcement to ensure the complete restoration of peace and order in the Local Government Area.”
“Governor Mutfwang urged people to actively support security measures by giving reliable intelligence to the appropriate security institutions. He concluded that the administration is working nonstop to bring about long-term peace in the State.”
Early on Wednesday, 24th January 2024, gunmen broke into Kwahaslalek village in Mangu. It was learned that the victims, who were primarily women and children, sought safety in the home of a prominent member of the community. The attackers circled the home before murdering the occupants. This happened following an earlier in the day disturbance in Mangu town.
