EXCLUSIVE: Under Secretary Zeya Travel to Nigeria and Côte d’Ivoire

The Under Secretary of State for Civilian Security, Democracy, and Human Rights, Uzra Zeya will travel to Abuja and Lagos, Nigeria, as well as Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire from January 27 to February 3, 2024.

The visits, according to the office of the Spokesperson, aim to make better, issues surrounding democracy while also concluding a major event in Africa.

In line with her visit to Abuja, Under Secretary Zeya, sets to deepen cooperation on democracy, civilian security, and humanitarian efforts with senior Government officials.

Under Secretary Zeya, living up to her title will, in addition, meet with religious leaders, civil society representatives, and labour leaders on freedom of expression and religion, and the protection of worker and human rights.

Correspondingly, Zeya in Lagos, will engage the civil society and private sector entities on a range of issues related to human rights, civilian security, and anti-corruption efforts.

In Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, the Under Secretary will give closing remarks at the Africa Cup of Nations Youth Forum on Sport Trafficking and Exploitation in Africa.

This will be to raise awareness about the dangers of irregular migration and combatting trafficking in persons.

Further into the visit, there will be meetings with government ministers, religious leaders, civil society representatives, and multilateral organizations as the Under Secretary will advance partnerships and cooperation on democracy, governance, human rights, and regional security, in particular through the United States U.S. Strategy to Prevent Conflict and Promote Stability.
