Pakistan and Iran agree to Broaden their Security Cooperation

By Reporter 2

In a move to improve relations following tit-for-tat missile attacks this month at what they claimed were militant targets, Pakistan and Iran declared on Monday, January 29, 2024, that they respected each other’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and decided to increase security cooperation.

Days after their military tensions stoked concerns about further instability in the area since Israel and Hamas’s war broke out in October, the Foreign Ministers of the two nations held discussions in the capital of Pakistan.

Jalil Abbas Jilani, Pakistan’s acting Foreign Minister, stated that miscommunications between the two countries could be cleared up rather quickly during a joint press conference with his Iranian counterpart Hossein Amir Abdollahian.

Additionally, Jilani said that the two nations decided to ease each other’s fears and combat terrorism in their respective regions.

There have never been territorial disputes or conflicts between Iran and Pakistan, according to Abdollahian, who also stated that the two nations have a cordial understanding.

Abdollahian stated that Iran’s President, Ebrahim Raisi would be visiting Pakistan shortly.

Following the missile strikes, tensions between the two nations increased, leading Pakistan to cancel all high-level diplomatic and trade meetings and recall its ambassador to Tehran while preventing his counterpart from returning to Islamabad.

However, the envoys were asked to return to their posts, and Abdollahian was summoned for talks, while quick steps were taken to reduce the temperature.

Although there has never been a smooth relationship between the two Muslim countries, the missile strikes were the most significant events in recent memory.

Tehran claimed it had attacked Jaish al Adl (JAA) militants, while Islamabad claimed it had hit bases of the separatist Baloch Liberation Army and Baloch Liberation Front.

The Southwestern Provinces of Iran’s Sistan-Baluchestan and Pakistan’s Balochistan are within the extremist organizations’ operational territory. Both areas are essentially undeveloped, mineral-rich, and restless.

According to Iran, nine individuals were killed in the strikes in a border village on its soil, four of them were children. Pakistan reported that two children were killed in the Iranian strike.
