Taylor Swift’s Fourth Album of the Year Award Makes Grammy History
On Sunday, pop sensation Taylor Swift broke yet another record when she took home the Grammy for Album of the Year for an unprecedented fourth time, continuing the trend of women dominating the top awards in the music industry.
Additionally, Swift revealed that her new album would be out in April while standing on the Grammys stage.
For “Midnights,” the 34-year-old earned album of the year, surpassing the three-time winners of the award—music icons Frank Sinatra, Paul Simon, and Stevie Wonder.
Swift exclaimed about the joy she gets from composing and performing songs, expressing her excitement at the award. She exclaimed, “It brings me such joy.” “All I want to do is keep doing this.”
Swift previously announced that “The Tortured Poets Department” would be released on April 19 when accepting the Best Pop Vocal Performance Award.
“I would like to express my gratitude to the supporters by revealing a secret that I have been withholding from you for the past two years,” Swift declared while revealing the new album, which was made accessible for pre-orders during the Grammy Awards broadcast.
Swift, one of the women who swept the major Grammy awards on Sunday, is set to board a plane to Tokyo to resume the world’s highest-grossing concert tour.
With “What Was I Made For?,” a ballad created for the “Barbie” movie soundtrack, Billie Eilish claimed song of the year.
Backstage, Eilish remarked to reporters, “As a woman, it feels like you’re not being seen a lot of the time.” “This gives me a strong sense of being seen. It feels great to hear “good job” from someone sometimes.”
Miley Cyrus, who won her first two Grammy Awards on Sunday, 5 February 2024, won a record of the year for her song of empowerment, “Flowers.”
“This award is amazing,” stated Cyrus, “but I really hope that it doesn’t change anything because my life was beautiful yesterday.”
Pop/R&B singer Victoria Monet won Best New Artist. She honored her mother, describing her as “a single mom raising this really bad girl.”
Selections for the winners came from the Recording Academy’s roster of producers, engineers, and musicians. By bringing in more women and people of color, the organization has made an effort to diversify its membership in recent years.
Leading the field of nominees going into the evening, SZA took up three awards, including Best R&B Song for her song “Snooze.”
She exclaimed, “I came really, really far.” “I can’t believe this is happening, and it feels very fake.”
Boygenius, an indie rock group consisting of Julien Baker, Lucy Dacus, and Phoebe Bridgers, also took home three honors.
JONI MITCHELL, BILLY JOEL PERFORM
At the Grammy Awards, folk artist Joni Mitchell made her stage debut. She sang “Both Sides Now” while perched on a chair, wearing a hat and blonde braids, while Brandi Carlile played guitar next to her.
As a memorial to the several performers and chief executives who have died away in the past year, Stevie Wonder performed “For Once In My Life” in memory of the late Tony Bennett, who was seen singing along with a video.
Annie Lennox performed a rendition of “Nothing Compares 2 U” in honor of Sinead O’Connor, while Fantasia Barrino paid tribute to Tina Turner with a rendition of “Proud Mary,” supported by vocalists adorned in glistening gold and silver fringed attire.
Jon Batiste paid homage to Clarence Avant, dubbed “the Godfather of Black music,” by performing songs like “Ain’t No Sunshine” and “Lean On Me.”
The original singer and songwriter of the 1988 song, Tracy Chapman, joined country music sensation Luke Combs in a rendition of their cover smash, “Fast Car,” toward the beginning of the event.
Billy Joel sang his new single “Turn The Lights Back On,” his first original song in 17 years, toward the close of the show.
Rapper Jay-Z voiced his complaints about the Grammy Awards during his acceptance of the Dr. Dre Global Impact Award. Among his grievances was the fact that, despite having more Grammy Awards than anyone else, his superstar wife, Beyonce, had never won Album of the Year.
As Beyonce observed from the audience, Jay-Z remarked, “I don’t want to embarrass this young lady.” “But she’s never won an album of the year and has more Grammys than anyone else. Thus, even by your own standards, that is ineffective.”
