Family of Late Singer Mohbad Denies Threatening Widow
By Reporter 2
Alleged attempts on the life of Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, the late singer’s widow Wunmi, have been refuted by the family.
It was alleged that Wunmi had alerted authorities to the possibility that her late husband’s family was pursuing her and her son Liam’s lives.
It was also reported that she had received weird calls from individuals threatening to stop her pursuit of justice for her late husband’s soul.
However, on Friday, 9th February 2024, the family, in a statement through its legal team, described the allegation as sensitive, while urging her to disclose the identity of who among them made the threats.
Despite the unresolved concerns surrounding the paternity of their grandson, the family is not in a position to threaten the widow of their late son, according to a statement signed by Monisola Odumosu, a member of the legal team.
A portion of the statement said, “Mrs. Wunmi Aloba has brought forward several important problems. She began by declaring, “Her husband’s family has vowed to kill her and her son.” Mrs. Wunmi Aloba has not provided the public with a list of the precise names of people who threatened her, nor has she provided any proof of the Aloba Family’s threats against her.
He who asserts must prove, as the legal maxim “incumbit probatio qui dicit non-qui negat” suggests. Ilerioluwa Aloba should inform the Nigerian public if she feels threatened by someone who is investigating their late son’s murder.
“Despite the outstanding matters about their grandchild’s paternity, our clients have not threatened and are not in a position to harm the wife of their late son. Remember, even after Wunmi gave Mohbad’s father, Mr. Joseph Aloba, a harsh voicemail full of accusations, Mr. Aloba decided that the emotional pain caused by the loss of his late son was sufficient, and he chose not to reply.
The Aloba family asserted that she should permit the authorities to look into the situation, citing Mohbad’s wife’s assertions that she had reported those phoning and threatening her to the police.
The statement further stated that the Nigerian Police were aware of the appropriate course of action to follow in response to phone threats made against a complainant.
The legal team addressed Wunmi’s concerns that the Coroner’s court had not convened in five months and that she had not received an answer from the court. “The concern bothers our client equally. If she needs clarity, she should consult with her counsel concerning this,” the team said.
“It is instructive to see that our clients have no justification for threatening Mrs. Wunmi Aloba, nor have they ever done so. It appears like everyone is working to bring justice to the late singer Ilerioluwa Aloba (Mohbad).”
“Conscience, as it is often said, is an open wound that can only be healed by the truth, which is what our clients and those engaged in the effort to identify the person or people responsible for the late singer’s death are after.”
Mohbad passed away on September 12, 2023, at the age of 27, and his death’s circumstances sparked debates on social media.
On September 18, 2023, the Lagos State Police Command established a 13-person special investigation team to look into the death.
September 21, 2023, saw the exhumation of Mohbad’s body in order to do an autopsy and determine the cause of his death.
In September 2023, Benjamin Hundeyin, the Public Relations Officer for the state police, tweeted that an “autopsy has been concluded” and the authorities were “awaiting result.”
While this was going on, Aloba declared in November 2023 that no one should take his son’s remains for burial without his permission.
