UK Trade Minister Visits Charterhouse School in Lagos

By Reporter 2

Kemi Badenoch, the Minister of Business and Trade for the United Kingdom, has paid a visit to the Charterhouse School facility in Lagos, which is the first British Independent School in West Africa.

The Senior Press and Public Affairs Officer and Communications Lead for Prosperity and Economic Development, Ndidiamaka Eze, made this revelation in a statement on Monday,  February 12, 2024.

Badenoch began serving as the Department of Business and Trade’s Secretary of State on February 7, 2023.

She continues to serve as the Equality Hub’s Minister for Women and Equalities, having been nominated to both positions on October 25, 2022, and September 6, 2022, as Secretary of State for International Trade and President of the Board of Trade.

According to Badenoch, the school is evidence of the UK Government’s support for Nigeria’s aspiration to provide high-quality education at home.

Together with Helen Grant, the Prime Minister’s Special Envoy for Girl’s Education visited the new campus’s building site in Lekki Ajah, Lagos.

According to Badenoch, recent negotiations between the UK and Nigeria have “helped to remove restrictions to transnational education investment in Nigeria worth around £50 million – enabling UK Higher Education Institutions to build partnerships with their Nigerian counterparts.”

She added, “We expect that this first significant investment will open doors for more in Nigeria’s education System. The first UK-independent School in West Africa, Charterhouse, is a fantastic place to observe the development of construction.

“I hope the school will provide many students who choose to study here in Nigeria with a world-class learning experience. The UK education system is rightly renowned throughout the world.”

“We are honoured to welcome the UK’s Secretary of State for Business and Trade to Charterhouse Lagos as we showcase the amazing facilities we are building,” said John Todd, Head, and Director of Education at Charterhouse School.

“As the first British Independent School in Nigeria, we are committed to providing top-notch education in Nigeria and are proud of our British heritage through our partnership with Charterhouse UK.”

“We would like to thank the British Deputy High Commission in Lagos and the UK Government for their unwavering support over the past year.”

Minister Badenoch is scheduled to visit Standard Chartered Bank, Avanti Satellite Communications, IHS Towers, and British International Investment, a British Development Finance Institution, while in Lagos. The purpose of the meetings is to deliberate on trade and investment prospects for businesses operating in both countries.

In addition, Badenoch is anticipated to sign a Memorandum of Understanding with Doris Uzoka-Anite, the Minister of Industry, Trade, and Investment, on Tuesday, 13 February 2024 in Abuja.
