Zamfara Killing: House of Reps Demand an Investigation
By Reporter 2
The repeated killings and property devastation in various communities within Zamfara State‘s Zurmi Local Government Area have prompted the House of Representatives to demand a comprehensive investigation.
Following the passage of a motion of urgent public significance on the House floor on Tuesday, 20 February 2024, during the plenary session, Zamfara State Representative Hassan Shinkafi introduced the resolution.
The Lawmaker, who was presenting the motion stated that the incident occurred during a time when people were struggling with the hardships brought on by the recession in their country.
According to him, the impacted areas had lost two Police Officers connected to the Divisional Headquarters of Zurmi Police, as well as several stores, homes, motorcycles, and food items valued at hundreds of millions of dollars.
After the motion was approved, the House urged the Inspector General of Police to form a tactical team and report back to the House in two weeks to solve the riddle surrounding the constant attacks leading to the killing of the people in the community.
Additionally, the House encouraged the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to promptly provide relief supplies to the impacted individuals.
This comes as the House requested the Federal Government to send more Military Personnel to the impacted areas to stop such incidents from happening in the future.
The House also appealed to the Committee on Defence, Police Affairs, Humanitarian Disasters Preparedness, and Legislative Compliance to make sure the mandate is followed.
A 2,969-man State Community Protection Guard was established in February by Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal to address the State’s insecurity issues.
At a colorful event in Gusau to deploy the Security Guards, Lawal declared that his administration was ready to eradicate banditry to stop killing in the region.
He gave the Security Guard members strict instructions on how to carry out their responsibilities to make sure the effort was successful.
