President Tinubu Presides Over 10th FEC Meeting

By Reporter 2

President Bola Tinubu presided over the 10th Federal Executive Council meeting at the State House Chamber in Abuja.

Vice President Kashim Shettima, Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume, Chief of Staff to the President Femi Gbajabiamila, and Head of the Civil Service of the Federation Dr. Folashade Yemi Esan attended the meeting.

The 10th FEC meeting held under President Tinubu’s leadership was attended by at least 45 ministers. According to a source, the council deliberated over a memorandum proposing approval for the “Revamping of the Renewed Hope Infrastructure Fund.” As Akume had pointed out to the council members, the #3 items on the agenda were changed to “Approval for the revamping of the Renewed Hope Infrastructure Fund.”

Remember that the FEC was formally established on August 28, 2023, by President Tinubu. Meetings now take place on Mondays instead of the previous Wednesdays.

The Council’s mandate includes policy formulation, project execution, and general support to the President in his executive duties.

The President, Vice President, and the designated ministers make up the majority of the council, which is based in the Cabinet Affairs Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.

Article 148 (2) of the Constitution obligates the President to consult other constitutionally mandated advisory bodies, including the Nigeria Police Council, the National Security Council, and the Council of State. These bodies meet periodically to provide advice and recommendations, and the President must heed them.

“The FEC meets weekly to discuss scheduled items and take decisions,” the CAO states. However, in the thirty-one weeks after its inception, the Tinubu-led cabinet has convened just ten times.

On October 16, 2023, Mohammed Idris, the minister of information, clarified that the council will only convene when memos are to be reviewed.

Idris stated, “The Federal Executive Council meeting will now take place on Mondays instead of the customary Wednesdays that we are accustomed to. The President has approved this decision.”

Thus, Mondays are now the day for FEC meetings. That does not, of course, imply that it must occur each week. It will be postponed until next week if there are no matters to discuss.
