Suspended Treasurer, LP Spokesman Disagree on Re-election of Chairman
By Reporter 2
The re-election of Julius Abure as the new National Chairman of the Labour Party has been denounced by Mrs. Oluchi Opara, the Party’s suspended National Treasurer.
After receiving full support from delegates at the just-finished convention in Nnewi, Anambra State, Abure was elected National Chairman for a second term. Before this, he had been at odds with the Nigeria Labour Congress, led by Joe Ajaero, over party leadership.
The NLC had also demanded the chairman’s resignation and had written to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) asking them to stop supporting the Party’s National Convention. Party members had taken sides in the reactions to Abure’s re-election.
In response to the convention, Opara informed newsmen on Thursday, 28 March 2024 that it was conducted improperly because it took place in secret.
She stated, “It was a gathering of Abure’s support group. Was there a political convention? Where on earth did you ever hear that a convention is held in secrecy? There was never a convention. It was a support group that came together to think or plan for the future of whatever the support group was building.”
With the convention effectively conducted, the party would now concentrate on addressing internal divisions, according to Obiora Ifoh, the National Publicity Secretary.
Noting that the convention was held following the party’s bylaws, election laws, and the constitution, he also urged the party’s leadership and the irate members to reconsider their positions and collaborate with the recently elected chairman.
“We’re not afraid. We will not be interacting with anyone after our convention is over, save from trying to work out a solution to our disputes,” he declared.
