Lagos to Pull Down Structures that Fail Integrity Test

By Reporter 2

The Lagos State Government reaffirmed on Thursday, April 11th, 2024, that it will remove any structures that don’t pass its integrity test. As 14 nearby buildings at the Dosunmu Market on Lagos Island collapsed under the flames on Tuesday, 9th April 2024, Gov. Babjide Sanwo-Olu gave assurances about the action taken.

“Many residential apartments have been converted into warehouse space. Without a shadow of a doubt, I predict additional buildings will fall. I have completed evaluating a regrettable yet avoidable calamity. For a few hours, the initial responder to the fire was not allowed entry. This fire is still burning strong, having started over 48 hours ago.

“About 14 homes were affected as of the most recent count, and more could be destroyed following the thorough test. I’ve observed what could have been avoided; as we don’t yet have a complete report, I don’t want speculation to continue.”

At the fire’s location, he declared, “Based on the preliminary report, there was extreme negligence.” The Government will help individuals affected, but the Dosunmu Market will remain closed indefinitely. Any property that does not follow our construction norms and regulations will be demolished.

“We cannot permit anyone to endanger the environment, other people’s property, or their lives. But we will help the fire victims rebuild their lives. Th Governor lamented, “There are more progressive things we ought to be doing than spending scarce resources on preventable accidents.”  (NAN)
