Anxiety in Delta Community as Cleric Kills Sacred Snake

By Reporter 3

There is a palpable tension in Okeagbe community in Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State, as a cleric reportedly killed a sacred boa and escaped from the community before he was apprehended. The cleric is a member of God’s Grace Ministry, whose Headquarters is located in Warri.

Hence, the indigenes of the Okeagbe community embarked on protests to register their displeasure over the killing of the boa by the cleric. They chanted solidarity songs as they paraded round the community.

The protesters marched to the Police Station and an Army formation in the community to register their resentments over what they termed as “desecration.” The irate protesters did not allow the church to hold service on Monday, 6 May 2024 as they insisted that the church and the cleric must perform the necessary rituals to cleanse the town as well as bury the snake like a human being.

The cleric who is an indigene of Orogun community in Ughelli North Local Government Area scaled the fence and fled the scene before the protesters arrived. It was gathered that it is a taboo for anyone to kill a boa in Okeagbe community because the indigenes regard the snake as deity which the community worship, pray to and believe the snake provides food for them.
