Delta State Assembly Suspends Lawmaker over Misconduct
By Reporter 2
Matthew Omonade, the member representing Ughelli North 1 Constituency, has been suspended by the Delta State House of Assembly due to allegations of excessive misconduct. The Speaker, Dennis Emomotimi Guwor, issued the suspension order. Prior to the move, Majority Leader Emeka Nwaobi of Aniocha North made a motion on the house floor.
The plan, which had the support of Sapele’s Chief Whip, Perkins Umukoro, was accepted by the House in unanimity. On Wednesday, May 8, 2024, it was alleged that the suspended lawmaker had dishonestly and purposefully misrepresented the procedures of the House.
The Majority Leader claims that the lawmaker’s purported behavior is against the House’s rules and standing order, which is why the suspension is required. Omonade was placed under suspension for 14 legislative days after the motion was adopted.
Additionally, he was required to turn over all government properties that were under his control to the House Management. “By the provisions of the House of Assembly (Powers and Privileges) Law, Cap H6 Laws of Delta State, 2008 and the Standing Orders of the House, the Honorable Member representing Ughelli North 1 State Constituency shall forthwith withdraw from the House precincts for the period of the suspension,” the Speaker declared, announcing the decision of the House.
“All government property, including the official vehicle, that the Honorable Member representing Ughelli North 1 State Constituency has in his possession should be returned to the Management immediately.” After that, the Speaker gave the Sergeant-at-Arms instructions to lead the lawmaker out of the Assembly Chamber.
