Tinubu Vows to Tackle Gender-based Violence and Promote Female Education

On Monday, 13 May 2024, President Bola Tinubu promised to do everything within his power to put an end to gender-based violence and give girls more opportunities to learn in a secure and supportive environment. The President made the promise at the Old Banquet Hall, Presidential Villa, Abuja, during the Organization of African First Ladies for Development (OAFLAD) #WeAreEqual Campaign launch.
He emphasized the value of education in empowering women and advancing gender parity. President Tinubu praised OAFLAD’s effort for the campaign launch, noting that it has been successfully implemented in 15 other African nations and that its launch theme in Nigeria, “Education as a Powerful Tool for Change,” is essential for Africa’s growth.
“We must keep creating opportunities for all our children to access high-quality education without leaving anyone behind, especially the girl child,” he declared. “Regardless of identity, we have to create a society where everyone has equal opportunity because that makes society stronger and more peaceful. “
He praised the African First Ladies for their dedication to promoting gender equality and closing the gender gap in opportunities and appointments throughout Africa,
He declared, “As members of OAFLAD, I salute the commitment and dedication of the African First Ladies to advance gender equality and narrow the gender gap in opportunities and appointments across the African continent.”
The President also commended Senator Oluremi Tinubu, the First Lady of Nigeria, his wife, for her advocacy of education as the main means of advancing gender equality. “I would especially like to congratulate my beloved wife, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, the First Lady of Nigeria, for selecting education as the main weapon to support this campaign across the country.”
With an emphasis on “Education as a Powerful Tool for Change,” President Tinubu stated that the #WeAreEqual Campaign’s debut in Nigeria is essential to the continent’s progress. Along with emphasizing the need for laws and policies that uphold and advance women’s rights, he declared the need to fund female education and skill-buildin and offer inclusive economic possibilities. “Leadership is required to advance laws and policies that uphold and advance women’s rights, fund female education and skill development, and establish equitable economic opportunities for all.”
The President restated his commitment to making sure that every Nigerian kid has access to a high-quality education that equips women and girls to take on leadership roles and positively impact their communities. “I reaffirm my commitment to making sure that no child in Nigeria is denied access to high-quality education that equips women and girls to take on leadership roles and positively impact our communities,” he declared.
Speaking to the African communities, he said, “Let us carry forward this campaign, which promises to give an educated girl-child the potential to bring the necessary change and transform African communities for the better.”
He called on all stakeholders to continue the campaign to empower girls and advance gender equality. “In order to achieve gender parity and guarantee equal opportunities for all, Africa’s development depends on the focus of this campaign, which is being launched in Nigeria and is called “Education as a Powerful Tool for Change.”
