By Reporter 2

Early this week, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo granted Ghanaian citizenship to Stevie Wonder, the renowned American singer and songwriter, on his birthday, May 13, 2024.

Legendary musician Stevie Wonder took the Oath of Allegiance and was awarded his Certificate of Citizenship during a ceremony held in Ghana’s Jubilee House, making him a citizen of Ghana. Once he received his certificate, Stevie declared, “This is where I need to be.”

Wonder announced three years ago that he wanted to become a citizen of Ghana for a better future amid political unrest in the US. In an interview with Oprah Winfrey in 2021, he showed his love for Ghana by expressing his hope to see the country smile again before moving there.

Additionally, according to the BBC, the famous musician was given a birthday cake with the Ghanaian flag icing. The Oath of Allegiance for Stevie was taken at the Presidential Office in Accra on Monday,  13 May 2024, as reported by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s legal counsel on X (previously Twitter).

Wonder, who is well-known for classic singles like “You Are the Sunshine of My Life” and “I Just Called to Say I Love You,” has inspired many other kinds of music and has received 25 Grammy Awards and 74 nominations since Motown Records first recognized him in 1961.

The American citizen, Wonder, whose real name is Stevland Hardaway Morris, was born in Michigan. His early musical brilliance made him a pioneer in the field. Wonder’s heartfelt pride was captured in a video of the citizenship ceremony, which marks the beginning of a huge new chapter in his life. When the legendary musician showed up and joined in the fun, people there gave him a warm welcome.
