Kano Assembly Dissolves Five Emirate Councils

By Reporter 3

The Kano State House of Assembly has passed into law the Kano State Emirate Council Law (amendment 2), dissolving all the five Emirate Councils in the State, saying Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has the sole power to appoint new Emirs. This action was taken after deliberations on the floor of the house during plenary on Thursday, 23 May 2024.

The Assembly considered the Kano State Emirate Council Amendment Bill after scaling second and third readings on Thursday morning. The Deputy Speaker, Alhaji Muhammad Bello Butu Butu had earlier stated that repealing the law would restore the lost glory of Kano as the division of Kano Emirate to five reduced the capacity and dignity of the state at the national level.

The Majority Leader, Alhaji Lawan Hussaini Dala told journalists, that with the amendment of the law, all the five emirate councils were repealed while the Commissioner for Local Governments would serve as the overseer.
The house is to create a new second-class Emirate Council in the State.
