Former Abia State First Lady Resigns from PDP

By Reporter 2

Mrs Odochi Orji, the former First Lady of Abia State, has resigned from the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). This was stated in her Resignation letter, dated May 21, 2024, and addressed to her Umuahia Urban Ward 1 Chairman of PDP.

Her resignation comes just three weeks after her son, Chinedum Orji, the immediate past Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, announced his departure from the PDP. The former First Lady, whose husband, Senator Theodore Orji, controlled Abia State from 2007 to 2015, gave personal reasons for leaving the ‘Big Umbrella.’ She, however, did not reveal her future destination.

A copy of her resignation letter in Umuahia read: “I write to formally resign as a member of the PDP, effective today, May 21, 2024, for personal reasons. Thank you for your support during my stint as First Lady of Abia, and for remaining a loyal supporter of the party. I wish you the best.” She copied both the Abia State Chairman of the PDP and the Acting National Chairman of the party.

It is unclear whether her husband and former Governor, who governed for most of his eight years on the PDP platform and later served in the Senate for another eight years on the same platform, will also leave the Big Umbrella.

When asked, Senator Orji’s Aide and former Chief Liaison Officer, Hon Ifeanyi Umere, verified that the former First Lady had resigned from the PDP.

Recall that the PDP in the South East has experienced a tsunami of resignations since former Imo State Governor, Emeka Ihedioha abandoned the party.
