Deputy Speaker Celebrates Nigerian Children and Reiterates Reps Commitment to Child Protection Law
By Reporter 2
Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, saluted Nigerian children on this year’s Children’s Day, underlining the parliament’s commitment to legislation that protects children’s basic rights. The annual May 27 celebration honors children all throughout the world.
The Deputy Speaker, in a statement issued by his special assistant on press relations, Udora Orizu, stated that Nigerian children had enormous potential, which, if realized, would benefit the country and future generations. According to him, the realization of the adage “children are the leaders of tomorrow” requires the intentional and strategic creation and implementation of policies, including the legislative framework, to provide quality education to Nigerian children and defend their rights.
He stated that it was for this reason that the 10th House enacted a Bill in December last year aimed at protecting Nigerian children from internet violence and cyberbullying, among other things. Emphasizing that no efforts should be spared by governments at all levels in supporting policies that promote the rights of the Nigerian child, Kalu guaranteed that the parliament will continue to come up with laws that will empower the children.
The Deputy Speaker stated, “Today, we honor all children around the country and globally, acknowledging the joy and purity they bring into our lives. We reaffirm our commitment to upholding and protecting every child’s fundamental rights, including their safety, education, and well-being. We shall continue to work toward a brighter future in which all children can thrive.
We are reminded that children are the future leaders of society, and it is our obligation to nurture the next generation of leaders by teaching them their inherent worth and goodness, as well as assisting them in seeing within themselves the immense power and potential they possess. “Happy Children’s Day.”
