Naira Abuse: Court Adjourns Case Against Cubana Chief Priest
By Reporter 3
A Federal High Court sitting in Lagos on Wednesday, 5 June 2024, adjourned a case involving celebrity bartender, Pascal Okechukwu to 25 June 2024, over alleged abuse of the Naira.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), arraigned Okechukwu popularly known as Cubana Chief Priest on 17 April 2024, on a three-count charge of allegedly spraying and tampering with the Naira notes during a social event at Eko Hotel in Lagos. Cubana Chief Priest had pleaded not guilty to the charges and was subsequently granted bail in the sum of N10 million.
When the case was last adjourned on 2 May 2024, the Defence Counsel, Mr. Chikaosolu Ojukwu (SAN), had informed the court that the parties were considering a settlement option and had applied that the matter be settled under the provisions of Section 14(2) of the EFCC Act.
Following the position, the Defence Counsel thereafter applied for a withdrawal of the preliminary objection, and since there was no objection from the prosecution, the court granted the same. The court then adjourned the case on June 5 June 2024 for a report of settlement.
However, on Wednesday, 5 June 2024, newsmen gathered that the defense had written a letter seeking an adjournment of the case. The Judge therefore fixed the case for 25 June 2024.
