By Reporter 2

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission‘s (EFCC) Benin Zonal Command arrested three people for spraying naira notes at a burial. The EFCC made this known in a statement published on X on Friday, 7 June 2024. The statement read, in part, “The suspects were arrested following credible intelligence on their suspected involvement in naira abuse.”

“The suspects are Stanley Ogbolu (35), Odiaka Sorwu (42) and Kelvin Anyakwu (42). They were apprehended in Asaba, Delta State, at a burial ceremony for reportedly spraying naira notes on a celebrant.” The EFCC noted that once the investigations are completed, the suspects will face court charges.

This arrest comes amid the EFCC’s ongoing crackdown on anyone who abuses the naira, as spraying and mishandling banknotes are deemed offenses under Nigerian law. In May, PUNCH reported that the EFCC detained Janty Emmanuel after intelligence revealed she was spraying Naira notes at a social gathering.
