By Reporter 2
The Police Service Commission (PSC) has approved the appointment of Assistant Inspector General of Police, Yahaya Abubakar, as Deputy Inspector General of Police. According to Ikechukwu Ani, Head of Press and Public Relations for the Commission, Abubakar was the AIG in charge of Zone 14 Katsina before his appointment. He will serve as the Police Management Team’s representative for the North East Geopolitical Zone, succeeding DIG Habu Sani, who recently retired as DIG Force Intelligence Bureau.
The Commission also approved the promotion of 122 other Senior Police Officers, including ten Commissioners of Police to the rank of Assistant Inspectors General, fifteen Deputy Commissioners of Police to substantive Commissioners, thirty-six Assistant Commissioners of Police to Deputy Commissioners, and sixty-one Chief Superintendents of Police to the rank of Assistant Commissioners. The decisions were made at the Commission’s Management Meeting on Thursday, June 6th, 2024, which was presided over by the Chairman, Dr. Solomon Arase, retired Inspector General of Police.
According to spokesman Ikechukwu Ani, “The 15 Deputy Commissioners of Police, 10 Commissioners, and AIG Abubakar appeared before the Commission in session for the compulsory interactive promotion interview, which is one of the conditions for their promotion to the next rank. During the interactive sessions, the Commission Chairman advised the Officers to be prepared to capitalize on the increasing dynamic and ubiquity of crime and criminality as part of the revolution in information and communication technology.
This will be accomplished by “charting out pathways for effective policing and internal security management that must necessarily orient from informed crafting and employment of an applicable mix of strategies, standard operating procedures, and tactics by the police, other law enforcement, and regulatory agencies of the State.”
Dr. Arase charged them with being sincerely committed to their sacred mission of securing the Nigerian nation by efficiently protecting lives and property, as well as preventing and controlling crime and criminality throughout the country. He pledged the Commission’s willingness to guarantee that Officers promotions are consistent and predictable.
The list of promoted officers has been forwarded to the Inspector General of Police for implementation and further action.
