Democracy Dividends Coming your way, Speaker Promises Nigerians

By Reporter 2

Tajudeen Abbas, Speaker of the House of Representatives, has congratulated Nigerians on the 25th anniversary of unbroken democratic governance, assuring them that more democratic dividends will be delivered to them shortly. On May 29, 1999, the regime of General Abdulsalami Abubakar turned over control to Olusegun Obasanjo’s democratically elected government, following widespread condemnation of the annulment of the late Moshood Abiola’s Presidential election on June 12, 1993.

In a statement signed on Wednesday, June 12 2024, by the Speaker’s Special Adviser for Media and Publicity, Musa Krishi, Abbas stated that Nigeria has grown over the last 25 years, adding that “the democracy dividends are bound to reach more Nigerians.” According to him, this year’s celebration marks an important day in the history of the National Assembly because it coincides with the first anniversary of the 10th Assembly.

On June 13, 2023, President Bola Tinubu inaugurated the 10th National Assembly. The message said, in part, “Democracy has arrived in Nigeria. The country has successfully navigated the learning curves; while it is not there yet, it has continued to grow in democratic experience and practice.”

The Speaker, who represents Zaria Federal Constituency in Kaduna State, urged Nigerians of all tribes, religions, genders, and ages to continue contributing their fair share to the country’s growth and development, assuring that Nigerians would transform into a nation that her citizens would be proud of.

Abbas also asked Nigerians to continue to support the government at all levels and to be law-abiding citizens, emphasizing that it is the joint responsibility of everyone “with the people as the critical stakeholders,” to ensure the government’s success in its goals, policies, and programmes.
