Niger Delta Communities Write to Tinubu, Demand Release of Nnamdi Kanu

By Reporter 2

The Association of Niger Delta Communities has written to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, imploring him to release Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). In a letter dated June 13, written by President Isa Mohammed Obiri and Secretary Wisdom Oteyi, the group maintained that Kanu was just campaigning for equitable allocation of Niger Delta resources and had committed no crime to warrant his continuing detention.

According to the group, Kanu’s worries are shared by other individuals in the region, and so he has the support of other Niger Delta citizens. A copy of the letter seen by Vanguard in Umuahia read: “We are writing to you on behalf of the Association of Niger Delta Upland Communities and concerned citizens to urgently request the release of our Igbo/Biafran brother and activist, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, who is currently detained for peacefully advocating for the equitable distribution of natural resources in our regions.”

This gentleman has not broken any laws; he is only utilizing his rights to demand what is rightfully ours. “We beseech the Government to release this activist and engage in a dialogue to address his concerns, which are shared by many of us.”

The group warned that Kanu’s ongoing arrest, despite rising pleas for his release, could lead to regional unrest. The letter reads, “Failing to do so may only escalate tensions, possibly leading to unrest and public demonstrations. We firmly believe that through communication and mutual understanding, a solution can be reached that benefits all parties concerned.

“We respectfully urge the Government to take the necessary steps to release Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the esteemed activist, within the next fourteen days for the benefit of our regions and the nation as a whole.

“We are optimistic that by taking this move, we can avert additional disturbance and make progress toward a peaceful resolution to the current crisis. However, your failure to release our leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, will result in a global shock. The Niger Delta’s upland communities will expose the powerful.”
