Donald Sutherland, the enigmatic Canadian actor whose extended career included films such as “The Dirty Dozen” and “The Hunger Games,” died on Thursday, 20 June 2024, according to his son. He was 88 years old.
“With a heavy heart, I tell you that my father, Donald Sutherland, has passed away,” wrote actor Kiefer Sutherland on X. The elder Sutherland’s distinct face and piercing eyes added depth and mystery to the wide range of parts he played on film during the last half-century.
He has played dashing leading men, antiheroes, and villains, most recently becoming known to a new generation of fans as evil President Snow in “The Hunger Games” franchise. “I personally believe he was one of the most influential actors in film history. “Never intimidated by a role, good or bad. He loved what he did and did what he loved, and you can’t ask for much more. Kiefer Sutherland wrote, “A life well lived’.
After a “meandering” start to his acting career, Donald Sutherland rose to notoriety in Robert Aldrich’s “The Dirty Dozen,” in which 12 criminals are assigned to carry out what looks to be a suicide mission in occupied France.
Sutherland’s mischievous charms drew the attention of “M*A*S*H” producers, who placed him among stars like Charles Bronson, Lee Marvin, and Telly Savalas.
Sutherland’s subtle satire on the Vietnam War, in which he was paired opposite Elliott Gould, made him a household figure in 1970s America and paved the way for a long career in show business, working with some of the biggest names in the industry.
