Jigawa Assembly Lifts Suspension of Four Council Chairmen

By Reporter 2

The Jigawa State House of Assembly has lifted the suspension of four Council Chairmen. According to reports, the House suspended the chairmen on March 6, 2024, due to suspected wrongdoing, neglect, and improper use of public funds revealed by its Committee on Local Government during an oversight visit to their respective LGAs.

The House then formed an ad hoc committee to probe the suspended Council Chairmen. While presenting its report, Mr Aminu Zakari, the committee’s Acting Chairman, highlighted 11 findings/observations made throughout its investigation.

Zakari stated that the committee carefully reviewed the documents presented to it, including a consultant’s report on each of the four Local Governments. He stated that the suspended Council Chairmen’s documents in defence of the claims against them and their pleas were taken into account.

Zakari stated that the committee came up with 11 recommendations. He added that one of the recommendations was to warn the concerned chairmen sternly to refrain from unethical or unbecoming behaviour in administrative and financial affairs.

“That this Honourable House graciously examines the suspended council chairmen’s appeals. That the suspension placed against the following Council Chairmen: Bappa Shinge; Auyo LG, Bala Usman-Chamo; Dutse LG, Ahmed Rufa’i; Gumel and Shehu Sule-Udi; Ringim LG, be lifted and that they should resume their duties as the Chairmen of their respective LGs,” Zakari said quoting the recommendations.

Following the Assembly’s vote, the Speaker, Haruna Aliyu, recalled the four Chairmen to resume office with immediate effect. On behalf of the Chairman, Usman-Chamo of Dutse LG thanked the lawmakers for their gesture. He expressed gratitude to their followers and well-wishers for their solidarity.
