Customs Officer Dies at National Assembly

A Senior Officer of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Deputy Comptroller Etop Andrew Essien, from the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has been confirmed dead while attending a House of Representatives Public Account Committee meeting.
Akin Rotimi Jr, the House Spokesman/Chairman of the House Committee on Media and Public Affairs, said in a statement on Tuesday, June 25, 2024, that the officer experienced “sudden health complications” during the interaction, which occurred about 1 p.m.
He stated, “It is with deep grief and regret that we confirm the death of an esteemed official of the Nigeria Customs Service who was at the National Assembly for a meeting with a House Committee.
“During the engagement, which took place about 1 p.m. on Tuesday, June 25, 2024, the official experienced unexpected health problems.” Despite the prompt and meticulous efforts of first responders and medical experts at the National Assembly Clinic, he died.”
However, “The House of Representatives expresses its profound sympathies to the deceased’s family, friends, and colleagues Of Deputy Comptroller Etop Andrew Essien, during this sad time. We acknowledge his substantial services to the Nigeria Customs Service and our nation.
The House of Representatives is prepared to assist, to understand the circumstances surrounding the occurrence and is fully collaborating with all appropriate authorities to ensure that all necessary protocols are followed.”
The Speaker of the House, the Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, extended his sympathies, saying, “We are extremely saddened by the unexpected passing of a committed public servant. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time.”
