“Biden Lost the US Presidential Debate; I Feel Sad for Him” – Bolaji Akinyemi
By Reporter 2
Bolaji Akinyemi, former Minister of Foreign Affairs, stated that President Joe Biden lost the United State Presidential Debate and expressed sympathy for the US President. Akinyemi made this statement in an interview with Arise Television on Friday, 28 June 2024.
The former Minister stated that it is unfortunate that Biden and former President Donald Trump must compete. He stated, “While watching it, I detested Trump; he had that cynical look on his face. Shakespeare warned against determining a man’s heart by his looks, but in Trump’s case, this was possible.”
“He stammers; he was trained how to speak, and this influences the way he speaks. Joe Biden’s optics were bad; I admit he appeared confused, but he talks the way he was trained.”
According to Akinyemi, Biden should have done a better job of opposing Trump. “Trump practically avoided every question he was asked and twisted everything back to the question of illegal immigrants,” he disclosed. He chastised Biden for not criticizing Trump’s links with dictators such as Putin, the Chinese, and North Korea.
Akinyemi declared, “I agree with the public that Biden lost that debate.” He also responded to accusations of Kamala Harris, emphasizing that the vice president’s effectiveness is defined by the president’s responsibilities. “If she does a lousy job, it’s because she has been given a lousy assignment,” he stated.
He also said it was unfair that polls showed Trump with 66% and Biden with 34%, given Biden’s speech handicap. According to Akinyemi, changing the nominee at this point would be unprecedented and potentially detrimental to the Democrats.
“A third candidate will simply throw the election to Trump,” he warned. Speaking about historical debates, Akinyemi contrasted Biden’s circumstance to Nixon’s in 1960, when he appeared bad on television while having control of the facts. Regarding Biden’s issues, Akinyemi stated, “I don’t think Biden can overlook the look of old age and the look of being lost.”
He praised Biden’s credible salary increases in the United States but warned that issues like the Middle East may cost him the election.” When Biden was asked about blacks, he defended himself all the time as if he was on trial, where it should have been Trump,” he said.
Akinyemi, on the other hand, advised the Democrats against changing Biden at the convention, fearing it would generate unwarranted sympathy for him. “I don’t want the Democrats to commit suicide; changing Biden may get the old man a lot of sympathy that you don’t treat old people who have done you a favour this way,” he said.
