Kogi State Confirms Two Cholera Cases, Sets Up Response Team

The Kogi State Government has confirmed two cases of cholera in Lokoja and Omala Local Government Areas. Abdulazeez Adeiza, the State Commissioner for Health, announced on Tuesday, 2nd July 2024, that the administration has presented comprehensive infection prevention instruments as a swift response to ensure a cholera-free environment in the State.
He stated that Kogi State has been lucky to have experienced minimal damage from the present cholera outbreak. Adeiza reported that one case has already been discharged and the other is now undergoing treatment, and there have been no fatalities.
According to him, the Ministry of Health has created strict surveillance systems, offered comprehensive training to healthcare personnel, and conducted large awareness efforts to combat the spread of the disease.
The Commissioner noted that the ministry had provided its healthcare staff with the necessary training and resources to enable a timely and effective reaction to any potential outbreaks across the State.
He emphasized the need for community involvement, noting that the Government is working with Community leaders, Traditional rulers, and Religious figures to educate the public on cholera prevention measures. He also asked people to maintain excellent hygiene habits such as regular hand washing and the use of clean water, among others.
The Commissioner directed the cholera response team, which included healthcare workers, surveillance officials, and laboratory technicians, to properly investigate reported cholera cases, collect samples, and offer necessary treatment to prevent its spread.
