A prominent member of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Ambassador Olufemi Ajadi Oguntoyinbo, has cautioned protest organizers nationwide not to let thugs take over the demonstration.
In a statement that was made available to newsmen on Monday, 29 July 2024, Oguntoyinbo stated that nonviolent protest is legal and counseled the organizers to maintain peace throughout the demonstration.
The NNPP chieftain urged the Federal Government under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to permit a peaceful protest free from violence and military interference. Additionally, he implored the administration to pursue changes that will result in a responsible, responsive, and capable government that can promote sustainable growth for the general public’s benefit.
He urged politicians and security personnel to exercise patience and advised law enforcement personnel to refrain from engaging in physical altercations with protestors. He pleaded with the Federal Government to accommodate peaceful protests without using force, and to view the rallies as a call for good governance from the entire country.
“I urged the Federal Government to permit a peaceful demonstration free from violence and military interference, as Nigerians prepare for the start of a nationwide protest on Thursday, 2 August 2024.
“I implore the administration to pursue changes that will result in an accountable, responsive, and capable government that can spearhead sustainable development for the general public’s benefit. The goal of the protests, which is a call for good governance, should be strictly adhered to. I also called on the demonstrators to demonstrate peacefully and make sure the protests are not hijacked by politicians and hoodlums.
“The government ought to utilize the demonstrators’ demands as a springboard to reconsider some of its policies that are stifling the lives of Nigeria’s oppressed citizens.
