By Reporter 2

Eleven violent protesters have been apprehended by the Police Command in Niger for reportedly attempting to set fire to the Tafa Local Government Secretariat during the countrywide demonstrations.

The Command’s spokesperson, SP Wasiu Abiodun, revealed in Minna on Thursday, 1 August 2024, that the thugs stole priceless objects and set a portion of the secretariat on fire.

He clarified that at around nine in the morning, a group of miscreants from the Gurara Council Area of Niger State and the Tafa area of Kagarko Local Government Area of Kaduna State invaded the secretariat, which is located in Sabon-Wuse along the Abuja-Kaduna Expressway.

Abiodun claimed that in addition to vandalizing and partially setting fire to the secretariat, the thugs also damaged two cars and vandalized another two cars. He added that police and other security services were called to the scene as the thugs continued to steal goods from inside the Secretariat’s offices.

According to Abiodun, eleven criminals were apprehended with different kinds of dangerous weapons, including firearms; the other miscreants were scattered from the area, and some of the stolen goods had been found.

In addition to stating that traffic is once again free to travel on the expressway, Abiodun noted that an inquiry into the violent act has begun in an attempt to apprehend the other miscreants who escaped

He issued a warning, advising the public, parents, and residents to warn their children not to participate in violent protests or damage Niger State public property as such conduct would not be accepted.

He also warned that “Anyone caught engaging in violent demonstrations and any act of lawlessness would be dealt with decisively under the law.”
