“Akpabio Should Resign Over Comment on Protest” says APC Chieftain

By Reporter 2

Jonathan Vatsa, a Chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Niger State, has called on Senate President Godswill Akpabio to resign for reportedly encouraging hunger protesters to carry on with their demonstration by saying, “We shall be eating.”

Despite Akpabio’s denial, Vatsa characterized the comment in a statement on Tuesday, 6 August 2024, as disrespectful and embarrassing for the ruling party, pointing out that it was an exhibition of the “eating” culture within the Peoples Democratic Party, Akpabio’s former party.

According to the former Niger State Commissioner for Information, the Senate President is required to apologize to Nigerians. “It is a huge error and a disservice to this country to turn around and make someone like Akpabio a Senate President in the APC government,” stated Vatsa. As a result, this government is incapable of doing things right.

“Those who Nigerians were tired with and chose, to embrace ‘change’ in 2015 have taken control of the APC as a party. They have been eating, and intend to keep eating, as Akpabio made Nigerians believe.

“It’s unfortunate, as I’ve said before and will say again, that we are opening our arms to people whom we initially accused of robbing this nation, so how can we make things right? Akpabio wants to continue eating under the APC government, the same food he ate for 16 years under the PDP regime. This is a national tragedy.”

Vatsa stated that Akpabio “shouldn’t have been allowed to occupy the seat of the Senate President, because his State, Akwa Ibom, was governed by the PDP. He continued, this party has to start restoring its reputation and gaining the trust of Nigerians by 2027. To show Nigerians that we are a serious party, we must begin with Akpabio’s resignation.”
