IHRC Applauds Nigeria For Acknowledging Citizen’s Right
By Reporter 2
The Nigerian government has received accolades from the International Human Rights Commission for recognizing citizens’ constitutional right to demonstrate against unjust governance.
It also commended the Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Security (DSS), Nigeria Armed Forces, and other security organizations for upholding law and order throughout the demonstration.
This was reported in a press release signed by Amb (Dr) Malami Shehu Ma’aji, the African Ambassador-at-Large of the IHRC, and made available to journalists in Abuja, Nigeria.
According to the IHRC Ambassador, who also referred to the protest as a fundamental human right, said that protest is an essential tool for holding governments accountable. However, he sent a warning to the demonstration organizers around the country, telling them to approach the authorities and make their requests in a polite, peaceful, and orderly manner, rather than remaining faceless.
Dr. Malami called for protesters to interact with the government to foster communication and understanding for peaceful coexistence, emphasizing the value of responsible and productive engagement. He made it clear that using this strategy would guarantee a peaceful settlement of disputes and help to avoid needless confrontations.
He also asked the Nigerian President to pay attention to the concerns of the country’s citizens and youth, to advocate for fundamental reforms to solve urgent issues. “I want to underline how important it is for the Nigerian government to show its commitment to building a more prosperous and stable nation by hearing what its people have to say,” he added.
In particular, Dr. Malami urged the government to deal with the urgent problems of lowering the cost of food, products, and services, de-escalating threats, and reviving Nigeria’s economy. In his opinion, the government might show its dedication to the welfare and well-being of its people by taking this action.
The statement from the IHRC ambassador coincides with a wave of agitations and protests in Nigeria by different groups demanding improved governance and changes to put an end to hunger and insecurity. It is believed that his words of warning and guidance are a welcome and appropriate intervention to support national peace, stability, and constructive involvement.
