The Nigerian Navy has delivered 72 bags of 40 kg each of cannabis sativa and four detained suspects to the Marine Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).
In a statement released on Tuesday, 27 August 3024, Lt. Hussaini Ibrahim, Base Information Officer of Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) BEECROFT, stated that the Navy handed over three Ghanaians and one Beninese.
According to Commodore Rafiu Oladejo, the captain of NNS BEECROFT, who was represented by Navy Capt. Mutalib Raji mentioned that consignments were intercepted by the Quick Response Team on August 25, 2024.
He claimed the operation was a result of reliable and useful information that NNS BEECROFT had obtained regarding some criminal elements’ suspicious activities around the Lekki Beach area. As a result, the team was sent to the location for a thorough operation, which led to the seizure of 72 bags containing more than 2,880 kg of cannabis sativa.
He also explained that the initiative was in response to Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, Chief of the Naval Staff, who issued a strategic directive to guarantee a secure maritime environment conducive to economic growth.
“Three Ghanaians, Godswill Zevor, Monday Kpomeja, and Gbega Agbeko, as well as a Beninois, Elugbe Philip, were taken into custody by the squad. Those who engage in the trafficking of illicit narcotics are cautioned to stop as NNS BEECROFT will keep going after any criminal element found operating within its jurisdiction.
He further stated, “This successful operation is a testament to NNS BEECROFT’s relentless efforts to curtail the use and spread of illicit drugs among teeming youths, which endangers their health and the security of the country.”
