“INEC Should Conduct LG Polls to Guarantee Transparency” – Doguwa
By Reporter 2
Alhassan Ado Doguwa (APC, Doguwa/Tudun Wada Federal Constituency), a member of the House of Representatives, has asked the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), to conduct elections for the Third Tier of Government to guarantee transparency.
In a statement he made available to the media on Monday, 2 September 2024, the legislator emphasized the need for grassroots democracy to be strengthened, stating that the national electoral umpire’s leadership is the only way to achieve this.
The Chairman, House Committee on Petroleum (Downstream), Doguwa, stated that several laws concerning Local Government administration needed to be reviewed. He expressed confidence that the increasing urban migration will be stopped by an effective Local Government structure.
“The sole dependable electoral umpire is INEC. If we don’t promptly review our electoral and constitutional rules to allow INEC to hold local council elections, Nigerian local council elections will remain a mockery of what they should be.
“Only INEC-conducted elections can ensure the integrity of our electoral system, our constitutional safeguards, and our participatory democratic processes.
“It will solidify the intellectual soundness of the latest ruling and declaration from the Supreme Court regarding the independence of Nigeria’s third tier of government,” he concluded.
