NBA Provides #EndBadGovernance Protesters Free Legal Services
By Reporter 2
The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has extended an offer of free legal assistance for #EndBadGovernance protesters facing legal cases across the nation.
Afam Osigwe, the NBA President, who made this announcement on his X handle on Wednesday, 4 September 2024, also gave NBA branches instructions to keep an eye on the court cases involving protesters around the nation.
He stated, “I have instructed the Nigerian Bar Association’s branches to keep an eye on the #EndBadGovernance protester’s legal proceedings. I’ve also started a pro bono support program for protesters who don’t have access to a lawyer for free legal assistance.
In areas where demonstrators are presently facing legal action, the Nigerian Bar Association Citizens’ Liberties Committee (NBA-CLC) has been entrusted with maintaining continuous communication with the NBA branch chairmen and human rights committees. This guarantees that there is no unfairness for any defendant.
“To ensure that trials are held with strict adherence to due process, protecting the legal rights of all defendants, the NBA legal team will keep an eye on court proceedings.”
“The legal teams of the Nigerian Bar Association are present in court and will persist in overseeing the proceedings to guarantee the preservation of the rule of law, the defense of defendants’ human rights, and the administration of justice.”
Following accusations of treason, nine of the #EndBadGovernance protesters were placed under remand in the Kuje Correctional Center, and the court ordered the remand of the only female protester at the Suleja Correctional Facility.
From August 1 to August 10, 2024, protesters joined thousands of others in protesting against hunger and poor governance.
