“Russia Reserves the Right to Deploy Nuclear Weapons if Attacked” – Vladimir Putin
By Reporter 2
Vladimir Putin, the President of Russia, stated that his country reserves the right to use nuclear weapons in the event of invasion.
In a meeting on nuclear deterrence with the Security Council, Putin listed one of these circumstances as “if the enemy, using conventional weapons, poses a critical threat” to Russia’s sovereignty.
Putin demanded during the meeting that Russia’s official policy on nuclear deterrence be updated and modified to reflect contemporary circumstances.
Putin stated that any aggression against Russia by a non-nuclear state that involves or is supported by a nuclear state is suggested to be viewed as a coordinated attack on the nation. He said that if credible information regarding the widespread launch of aerospace attack weapons was received, Russia would take into consideration the use of nuclear weapons.
According to him, this would include hypersonic, drone, cruise missile, strategic, tactical, and other aircraft flying across Russia’s border. He also said all explanations of the existing deterrent strategy are commensurate to the risks and contemporary military threats to Russia. The nation has also adopted a “highly responsible” stance on the deployment of nuclear weapons.
