On Tuesday, January 9 2024, Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu issued an order to arrest three motorcycle riders and a soldier for riding in the wrong direction on the Lagos-Badagry Expressway. This was disclosed in videos posted on his X account on Tuesday, 9 January 2024, by Wale Ajetunmobi, the governor’s Senior Special Assistant on Media.

According to his caption, “This morning, lawless okada motorcyclists on the Lagos-Badagry Expressway in a single direction abandoned their motorbikes and passengers when they spotted Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s convoy.”

“One of the perpetrators, an Army Lance Corporal, was apprehended with his bike.” A portion of them fled on foot, leaving their motorbikes and riders behind, while others took off driving while carrying their passengers to avoid being apprehended by the Governor’s security personnel.”

A video captures the moment when a few motorcycle riders fled with their passengers to avoid being taken into custody by the governor’s security guards. They were leaving their bikes and their occupants behind and making their getaway on foot for some of them.

In another video, Sanwo-Olu threatened to lock up one of the motorcycle riders who was posing as a military. He said, “Put him there and let your father come to your help. I’m going to lock you up because you’re telling me you’re a soldier, worthless child.”

The Governor detained four motorcycle riders for breaking traffic laws, according to Adebayo Taofiq, the Public Relations Officer for the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority. “They broke traffic laws, which led to the arrest of four people,” he stated.

Recall that the Governor had outlawed the use of commercial motorbikes, or “Okadas” in 6 Local Government, Apapa, Lagos Mainland, Eti-Osa, Surulere, and Ikeja.

According to reports, He further expanded the prohibition on commercial motorbikes to include 5 local council development zones and 4 more Local Government regions. On September 1, 2022, the authorities enforced the full prohibition.

In addition, the Lagos State Task Force said that it would destroy all 130 motorbikes that were taken from commercial bike owners in the State’s Second Rainbow neighborhood, Alakija.

The bike riders’ disobedience of the State traffic legislation, which forbids them from operating on specific roadways, led to the enforcement and arrest, according to Shola Jejeloye, Chairman of the Lagos State Environmental and Special Offenses Agency.
