Supreme Court – Decision on Kano Guber Dispute on Friday

By Reporter 2

The Supreme Court announced its decision on Friday regarding the Kano Governorship Election.

The Supreme Court has scheduled the Kano State Governorship election dispute between New Nigeria’s Peoples Party Candidate Governor Abba Yusuf and All Progressives Congress candidate Dr. Nasiru Gawuna for decision-making on Friday, January 12, 2024.

The Supreme Court sent a notification on Wednesday, 10th January 2024 regarding its decision to each party involved in the lawsuit stating this.

As per the notification, the court ordered that no more than two attorneys from each side should be present.

The Election Petition Tribunal directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to provide a certificate of return to Nasir Yusuf Gawuna, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, for the March 2023 election. Additionally, the court had dismissed Governor Abba Yusuf, the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) candidate.

After hearing arguments from both sides in late December 2023, a five-member Supreme Court panel chaired by Justice John Inyang Okoro decided not to rule on the matter.

NNPP supporters have not stopped criticizing the Appeal Court’s decision, particularly in light of the ongoing dispute over the allegation that the Governor was the subject of two separate rulings, one in favor of the current administration and the other not.

Conversely, the APC followers persisted in applauding the two rulings that supported their candidate.

The fear in the State had driven Usaini Muhammad Gumel, the Commissioner of the Kano State Police, to declare a ban on all gatherings and protests, and it had also pushed the leaders of the two parties to sign a peace agreement, albeit little had come of it as violent occurrences continued.
