A Man Fatally Shot on a Subway Train in Brooklyn

By Reporter 2

The man was shot a short distance from his residence. According to the authorities, he was attempting to mediate a dispute between other passengers.

After intervening in a dispute between two other passengers about loud music in the vehicle, a 45-year-old man was shot and killed aboard a Brooklyn subway train on Sunday night, January 14, 2024, according to the police.

The guy, Richard Henderson, was shot on a Sunday night No. 3 train headed into Manhattan as it approached the Rockaway Avenue station in the Brooklyn borough of Brownsville, according to the police.

Mr. Henderson’s house was only a few stops away from the Franklin Avenue station in Crown Heights, where the train proceeded about 8:15 p.m. after the police received a 911 call. Upon arrival at a neighboring hospital, Mr. Henderson—who had been wounded in the back and shoulder—was declared deceased.

In this case, there have been no arrests made. According to the authorities, it’s unclear if the gunman intended to harm Mr. Henderson or another traveler.

It was the most recent challenging occurrence for New York’s subway system, which has suffered in the first few weeks of 2024 and is considered the backbone of the city in many respects.

Two train derailments have occurred already this year; one of them left 26 people wounded and caused severe service interruptions that lasted for days.

And in an event that investigators described as “subway surfing,” when thrill-seekers ride atop vehicles, a teenage boy was slain last week. Within two months, there had been two similar deaths.

A request for comment about Sunday’s killing went unanswered by a Metropolitan Transportation Authority spokesman.

As a small percentage of gun crimes in New York City, shootings aboard subway trains are uncommon. Two individuals were shot while riding a subway vehicle in the Brooklyn borough of Bedford-Stuyvesant in November. They had several minor wounds.

The city has seen a decrease in gunshots overall, after reaching a peak during the epidemic. The number of individuals shot in 2023 was roughly 400 fewer than the previous year, which was around 1,100.

Approximately sixty minutes after the massacre, Jeff Spinner-Halev, 59, a professor at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, was at the Franklin Avenue station visiting his daughter in Brooklyn.

In an interview, he expressed his fear that there were too many firearms in the city and that the shooting had him frightened about his daughter. Yet he did observe a decline in homicide rates. “I don’t believe New York poses a significant threat,” he declared. “A variety of locations witness these shootings.”
