INEC Chairman Calls on REC to Maintain Transparency

Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, (INEC) has advised Etekamba Umore, the just sworn-in Resident Electoral Commissioner, to maintain transparency in performing his duties.
This was revealed in a statement released on Tuesday, 30th January 2024, by Sam Olumekun, the National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee.
President Bola Tinubu’s ten nominees for RECs were appointed after the Senate gave its approval in November 2023.
Tinubu’s appeal for confirmation of the RECs’ nomination for INEC under Section 154(1) of the Constitution was granted, and the appointment ensued.
On December 12, 2023, Mahmood administered the oath to nine RECs, indicating that the tenth REC-designate will be sworn in January upon the conclusion of the REC representing Akwa Ibom State’s term.
As per the announcement released on Tuesday, 30th January 2024, Umoren was assigned to Delta State after the tenure of the last occupant of the position ended on January 29, 2024.
“The appointment of Mr. Etekamba Udo Umoren as Resident Electoral Commissioner, who will be stationed in Delta State as the current holder’s term ends yesterday, Monday, January 29, 2024, preceded the meeting.”
“Professor Mahmood Yakubu, the Commission Chairman, asked the newly appointed REC to uphold his oath of office, which calls for transparency in the performance of his duties.”
“He further directed the newly appointed REC to maintain consistent stakeholder consultations and adhere to the Commission’s Code of Conduct.”
Umoren is an indigene of Akwa Ibom State and holds a Bachelor’s degree in Geography from the University of Benin.
He advanced to the position of Permanent Secretary while serving in the Akwa Ibom State Civil Service in various roles.
