Police Applaud Residents for Calm Behaviour During Kano Rerun
By Reporter 2
The Kano State Police Command has expressed gratitude for the peaceful participation of citizens in the ongoing rerun elections in the State’s impacted areas.
The process is proceeding amicably at the moment, Usaini Gumel, the State Commissioner of Police, informed reporters on Saturday, 3rd February 2024.
Gumel stated that a lot of effort was being put in by the State’s sister Security Agencies and the Police to guarantee a crisis-free election.
“Enough armed personnel have been mobilized to provide security before, during, and after the election exercise,” stated the Police Chief.
He continued by saying that a large number of Security Officers had been deployed to guarantee a smooth rerun of the polls in all 60 polling units located in the three constituencies of the six Local Government Districts.
In order to guarantee a peaceful election, he said that the Command would send more Security Guards to the Kunchi/Tsanyawa Constituency.
Given the reported disruption of the voting process in Kunchi Local Government Areas, which involved ten polling places, the CP’s visit to the Constituency may not be unrelated.
However, during the rerun/by-elections in Enugu, Akwa-Ibom, and Kano States, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared that it was looking into election irregularities.
On Saturday, 3rd February 2024, the Commission made this announcement via its X Twitter.
Ten polling units in the Kunchi Local Government Area in the Kano State Constituency of Tanyawa and Kunchi have had disruptions in their operations.
“The commission declared that they would provide regular updates on the situation.”
