In an accident that happened on Tuesday, 12th February 2024, near Foursquare Church, Ajebo, along the Lagos-Ibadan expressway, five persons died and twelve were injured.
A Mazda bus with the registration number SMK685YG and a Howo truck with the registration number ZE-1210G were engaged in an accident that happened at 1:07 PM.
It is said that the tired driver of the Mazda bus fell asleep, lost control, and collided with the moving truck.
This was revealed in a statement provided to journalists on Tuesday by Florence Okpe, the Spokeswoman for the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Ogun State Sector Command.
The deceased have been interred at the FOS Mortuary in Ipara Remo, while the injured have been transported to Victory Hospital, Ogere Remo, in the State’s Ikenne Local Government Area for medical attention.
The statement partly reads, “The fatal crash occurred at about 1307 hrs on Lagos-Ibadan expressway.”
“A total of 18 persons were involved which comprised of 10 male adults and 08 female adults and 12 people were injured (10 male and 02 female) and unfortunately 05 persons were recorded dead from the crash ( 04 male and 01 female adult).”
“02 vehicles were involved with registration numbers ZE-1210G HOWO TRUCK and a Mazda bus SMK685YG.”
“The suspected causes of the fatal crash were tyre bust, speed and fatigue which led to loss of control because the driver slept off on the wheel and ran into a moving truck.”
“The injured victims were taken to Victory Hospital Ogere while the corpses were deposited at FOS Morgue, Ipara Remo.”
However, Anthony Uga, the Sector Commander of the FRSC Ogun Sector Command, has encouraged drivers to avoid speeding and to always choose high-quality tyres.
While highlighting the problem of exhaustion, Uga advised drivers to schedule time for relaxation. In addition, he urged passengers to remain vigilant and report any irregularities they observe in drivers, particularly if they witness a driver nodding off while operating a vehicle.
The Sector Commander expressed sympathy to the crash victims’ families and asked God to give them the strength to deal with the irreversible loss.
