Edo Assembly To Utilize Substituted Service on Shaibu
By Reporter 2
Philip Shaibu, the Deputy Governor of Edo State, is the subject of an ongoing impeachment case after the State House of Assembly announced that it will utilize substituted service to deliver the impeachment notice.
On Monday, 11 March 2024, during plenary, Blessing Agbebaku, the Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, made this announcement.
He claims that despite the Court sending him an impeachment notice via DHL courier service, Shaibu has not acknowledged receiving it.
The Deputy Governor will now get the notice of impeachment, according to Agbebaku, via a publication in the National Dailies.
The impeachment process against State Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu was started by the Edo State House of Assembly last week.
The Majority Leader of the State House of Assembly and member representing Ovia North East 1, Charity Aiguobarueghian, announced the start of the impeachment process last Wednesday, 6 March 2024 after a meeting. She said that 21 of the 24 lawmakers had supported the petition against the Deputy Governor, which was dated March 5, 2024.
The Majority Leader insisted that the number of legislators who signed the petition satisfied the two-thirds threshold set down in the constitution.
He mentioned that claims of perjury and revealing Government secrets of Edo State were the foundation of the petition.
Shaibu’s and Governor Godwin Obaseki’s relationship has become worse in the last few months.
Shaibu blamed his disagreement with Obaseki for his desire to succeed him as Edo State Governor during a recent appearance on Channel Television.
According to him, Obaseki is upset because he is not endorsing his chosen candidate.
“He is upset that I am not endorsing his candidate. I’m exercising my constitutional right to run for office. He has also done a great deal of bad things. I consider it to be politics, so it doesn’t matter.
“I’ve decided to always respect the governor’s office, and I’ll do so till the very end, whether I’m serving as Deputy Governor or something else.
I can assure you that the relationship is not amicable. I’ve tried to close the distance, but he won’t let it happen from his end, so it’s not from me,” Shaibu remarked.
