Israeli Military Intelligence Chief Resigns Over Hamas Attack

The Israeli Military announced on Monday, April 22, 2024, that the chief of its Intelligence Directorate has resigned, accepting responsibility for the mistakes that led to the historic October 7 attack by Hamas.
The first high-ranking official to resign was Major General Aharon Haliva, who did so because he was unable to stop the attack that startled Israel and the world.
The Military released a statement stating that, “Major General Aharon Haliva has requested to end his position, in coordination with the Chief of the General Staff, following his leadership responsibility as the Chief of the Intelligence Directorate for the events of the October 7 Hamas attack.
MG Aharon Haliva will step down from his position and retire from the IDF after his successor is chosen through a formal and disciplined process, (army).”
Haliva accepted responsibility for his failure to stop the attack in his letter of resignation. The Military provided a copy of the letter to journalists. He wrote, “On Saturday, October 7th, 2023, Hamas committed a deadly surprise attack against the State of Israel. The task assigned to the Intelligence Division under my command was not fulfilled.”
“That dark day has been with me ever since. Day by day, night by night. The tremendous pain I endured throughout the war will never go away.
According to an AFP count based on official Israeli numbers, 1,170 persons, primarily civilians, lost their lives as a result of the Hamas attack.
Since then, Israel has pledged to destroy Hamas and has launched a fierce offensive against the terrorist organization that controls the Gaza Strip.
According to the Palestinian Territory Health Ministry, 34,097 individuals have died as a result of Israel’s Military assault in Gaza, the majority of them were women and children.
