Quit making Movies that Depict Nigerians as Uncivilised – Yul Edochie
By Reporter 2
Nollywood actor Yul Edochie has pleaded with the Nollywood producers to stop producing movies that portray Nigerians as uncivilized and clowns when they travel abroad. With these kinds of plots, he said, film producers are damaging the nation’s reputation.
Instead, he suggested they tell stories of Nigerians who travel abroad and offer “traditional solutions to problems and become leaders over there.” Edochie posted on his Instagram page, saying, “I wish our producers would stop making films where Nigerians travel abroad, dey mumu.” Storylines like these make us look inferior.
“Oyibo people won’t produce a film in which a white man acts foolishly in Africa. Rather, they will make the white man in the film smarter than all the Africans, it’s deliberate. While we use ours to bring ourselves down, they use theirs to market themselves as superheroes.
“He or she always carries themselves with dignity and pride, walking with their shoulders up, always on Nigerian wear, teaching Oyibo people fascinating facts about ourselves that they were unaware of. Becomes a leader there and provides them with conventional answers to issues. Let’s market ourselves as superheroes as well.” Let’s produce movies where a Nigerian travels outside and assumes a prominent role for the Oyibo people.”
