The Ebonyi State Police Command has detained four suspects in connection with the alleged kidnapping and murder of Magnus Okeke, an Alex Ekwueme Federal University student from Ndufu Alike in the State’s Ikwo Local Government Area.
DSP Joshua Ukandu, the spokesperson for the Ebonyi State Police Command, revealed to Channels Television in a phone call that the Command has initiated an investigation into the student’s death to determine the cause.
“Four people have been arrested in connection to the event. The investigation is still ongoing to determine whether he was kidnapped for ransom, murdered, or cult-related. The suspects are still being questioned,” Ukandu stated.
In a press statement issued by the Public Relations Officer, Elom Ubochi, the University management indicated that they were working closely with the police and other security authorities to ensure that the student was rescued after receiving a report of his abduction.
However, all efforts to rescue him alive failed, as the victim’s decomposing body was discovered under the bridge of Akọ stream at Nwakpu village, along the Ikwo/Abakaliki route on Monday, June 17, 2024, two weeks after his disappearance.
According to preliminary information from Security Agencies, the alleged perpetrators of the horrible act were Ohankwu youths. Ubochi went on to say that there was no cult-related fighting on the University campus in which the victim was killed, as others have claimed. The PRO urged anyone with helpful information that could aid in the investigation to come forward and help authorities.
Magnus Okeke was a student in the Department of Accountancy before being abducted on June 1, 2024, on his way back to the private hostel where he was staying in Ohankwu village, Ndufu-Alike community.
