Nigeria, South Africa Call for Peace in Sudan

By Reporter 2

On Saturday, 20 July 2024, the Republic of South Africa and Nigeria reaffirmed their call for an immediate ceasefire and an end to the crisis in Sudan. The two nations further demanded that a procedure be implemented to speed up access to humanitarian aid within the nation.

This was said in a joint statement released by Yusuf Tuggar, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Mr. Ronald Lamola, the Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, South Africa, through Alkasim Abdulkadir, Tuggar’s Special Assistant on Media and Communications Strategy.

The ministers discussed the outcomes of their meeting in Accra, Ghana, on the sidelines of the African Union Executive Council. Peace and security in the African continent were among the topics of discussion between the ministers on both regional and continental issues.

The two nations specifically expressed their extreme concern for the ongoing conflict in Sudan. As a result of the conflict, innocent civilian lives have been lost, which has also made the humanitarian crisis worse, uprooted millions of people, harmed women and children, and destroyed vital infrastructure. The ministers reaffirmed the demand for an early ceasefire, the conclusion of the fighting, and the start of a procedure to provide access to humanitarian aid.

They asked the international community for swift, decisive action to support a peaceful, inclusive settlement of the Sudanese conflict. The ministers also reiterated South Africa and Nigeria’s longstanding and solid bilateral relations, friendship, and support.

They expressed their determination to intensify and broaden the two nations’ collaboration in various sectors. In this regard, the ministers committed to completing the arrangements for the next Bi-National Commission session, slated to take place in South Africa. (NAN)
